The apartment building, designed by Belgian architects was commissioned in the 1930’s by industrialist Lanaras. It is one of the city’s few remaining authentic art deco style buildings. It was built in the area of Kypseli, where the Athenian ‘crème de la crème’ rich and famous resided between the 1930’s until 1980’s, such as Maria Callas and many shipowners. Within a short distance from the Acropolis and the historic centre of Athens, the apartment overlooks the renowned café-filled, pedestrian zone of Fokionos Negri and the famous fountain/sculpture “The Bather” by Halepas (1851-1930). In the late 1980’s it was bought and renovated by the international banker (and earlier Greek-resistance hero) Nicholas Agiorgiti and his wife artist and collector Kalliroe. After many decades of neglect, the eccentric couple, took on the 360sqm apartment for renovation. Staying true to its original style, they filled it with their collections and transformed it into a unique living environment again.Fokionos Negri is 5 minutes taxi ride from the city center of Athens (Parliament Square). It is an old-aristocratic neighbourhood, with many beautiful buildings. The apartment is located opposite a fountain, and the whole street is a tree-lined pedestrian area filled with restaurants and coffee shops. The home is located near a main Boulevard of Athens named 'Patission', from where you can hop into a taxi to take you to the Acropolis and the historical centre in 10 minutes. The National Archeological museum is within walking distance. The nearest beach at 'Faliron', which also has a prestigious yacht marina, is about 20 minutes away by taxi.
About: Athens Center, GreeceAthens (Αθήνα, Athína) is the capital Greece and the country’s largest city. Athens is one of the world's oldest cities with a history that spans around 3,400 years. According to Eurostat, Athens is the 4th most populous capital city of the European Union with a population of 4,013,368 (in 2004). Modern Athens is a cosmopolitan metropolis that is central to economic, financial, industrial, political and cultural life in Greece. Classical Athens was a powerful city-state that was the centre for the arts, learning and philosophy and widely referred to as the cradle of Western civilization and the birthplace of democracy. The heritage of classical Athens is still visible in the city, represented by a number of ancient works of art and monuments. One of the most famous of all monuments being the Parthenon - widely considered a key landmark of early Western civilization. Athens’ infrastructure and social amenities have improved over the last decade due to the 2004 Olympic Games. The Greek Government, along with the EU, has funded major infrastructure projects such as the state-of-the-art Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport, the expansion of the Athens Metro system, and the new Attiki Odos Motorway. |
