Description: FROM 1856 TRADITIONAL CANAVA STONE HOUSE

The House is located in one of a few traditional villages situated in the centre of Santorini. Over an extended period of time, harsh weather conditions have given many layers of settlement to this village. What was once a working canava that time had forgotten took on, a massive transformation. With bold dynamic approach, simplicity and sophistication. All materials that are close to nature, gave form to this interior. To project a true sense of Santorini, with calm environment to wrap the mind in a transparent state. Mature aesthetic values resulted in simplicity with surprises. A typical form of Santorinian architecture with dome, exceeds the ordinary, over 2 levels. This “L” shape building is sheltered from all sides by high walls, giving privacy to the courtyard, and protection from winds. The renovation explored the 8 metre high ceilings, the 2 existing cisterns, and 50cm thick stone walls. All giving evidence of what this building was used for in the past, as canava, a place where wine was made and stored. As you enter the house from the courtyard, you will notice a separate double bed room, with en suite wet room / toilet. Urn style wash basin, porri stone shower, and toilet. The wooden barn doors to allow glimpses of the courtyard from the bed. The main area of the house begins with a set of thick wooden doors into a light airy kitchen. A simple white marble bench and sink, compliment the stainless steel appliances .Neutral colouring is carried through to the dining area. Which in turn flows onto the lounge room, space fills the area, the ambience is essentially Santorinian with, white washed walls. With porri, (volacanic stone), used in archways to separate the rooms. Curves and the smooth polished cement flooring bring it together. A state of Greekness, with touches of terracotta ceramics. Wall lighting is dotted in the area with black volcanic stones. And down lighting is in the cisterns, china cabinet with lattice doors, and kitchen /dining area floor

About: Santorini, Cyclades, Greece

Santorini (Greek: Σαντορίνη) and officially Thira (Greek: Θήρα), is an island in the southern Aegean Sea, about 200 km (120 mi) southeast from Greece's mainland. It is the largest island of a small, circular archipelago which bears the same name and is the remnant of a volcanic caldera.  The municipality of Santorini comprises the inhabited islands of Santorini and Therasia and the uninhabited islands of Nea Kameni, Palaia Kameni, Aspronisi, and Christiana. Santorini is essentially what remains after an enormous volcanic explosion that destroyed the earliest settlements, on a formerly single island, and created the current geological caldera. The island is the site of one of the largest volcanic eruptions in recorded history: the Minoan eruption (sometimes called the Thera eruption), which occurred some 3600 years ago at the height of the Minoan civilization. The eruption left a large caldera surrounded by volcanic ash deposits hundreds of feet deep and may have led indirectly to the collapse of the Minoan civilization on the island of Crete, 110 km (68 mi) to the south, through a gigantic tsunami.
